About Us

Katharine

Founder
I am British but was born and grew up in Hong Kong. In those days we travelled to Britain by ship which already gave me an interest in the world and other countries and cultures. After boarding school in England I studied German and French at university – the German part brought me to Austria for my year abroad where I met my husband, Herbert. I soon returned to Austria and have lived here since 1975. I then had two children Daniel and Anna and rediscovered my interest in young children.

I taught English to adults and some children but after our third child, Rebecca I “found” Montessori which took over my life as well as my family’s. We opened The Children’s House in 1992 with 9 children and have grown ever since until we moved to our current premises in 2011 where we added a crèche. My six grandchildren have all attended The Children’s House.

My initial enthusiasm for working in this international Montessori environment with pre-school age children has never waned. Here they are given the freedom with limits to follow their interests and explore the world with wonder. They are also guided to become kind, empathetic, considerate individuals and I simply love spending time with them!

Founder
I am Austrian, grew up in Carinthia, studied Economics in Graz and have been living in Vienna since 1982.

I supported my wife Katharine with the start up of The Children’s House in 1992 and together with Katharine have been responsible for the financial, organisational and personnel matters from the beginning. In 2000 I joined The Children’s House full-time as I witnessed first-hand the positive effects of working in a child-oriented environment. Since 2020 I have slowly reduced my working hours and now support the team as a consultant as and when needed.

For me, the question of peace is essential and Dr. Maria Montessori is a cornerstone when it comes to this topic. Her philosophy and educational approach can lead to creating a better and more peaceful world.

Educational Head
I am half-British/half-Austrian and have lived in Austria, the UK, the US and Germany. I have 2 children who both attended The Children’s House several years ago.

I have worked at The Children’s House since 2011 in a full-time function but have been a part of this kindergarten since my parents – Katharine and Herbert Wolschner – first opened its doors in 1992 (when I was 12 years old). I completed my Montessori training for 3-6 years in 2007 through the London-based MCI and received my Montessori certificate for 0-3 years in 2014 from the Austrian Montessori Society. I also have a BA in Business Studies from the University of Birmingham and a Kindergarten Management diploma completed in Vienna. I worked in an international recruitment agency for several years before moving back to Vienna and turning my focus onto Montessori entirely. I joined my mother as educational head in 2019 and took over the role completely in 2022.
I love working at The Children’s House because it provides the children with an important and wonderful foundation that will guide them through life. I love the fact that The Children’s House provides amazing learning opportunities for the children, not only in an academic sense, but more importantly in terms of social awareness as well.

In addition, we have an incredible team of motivated staff who help create an atmosphere of respect and joy that lets the children discover who they truly are.

Together with the parents we have been able to create a true Children’s House community of international families who stay connected even years after the children have graduated kindergarten.

Working at The Children’s House is a journey of constant beautiful discovery and gives me the hope for a better future for all people.

Daniel

Administrative head
I have been involved with The Children’s House ever since it was started by my mother in 1992. For the first ten years I helped out with mainly administrative work, while spending a lot of my time abroad first at university in the UK (Chinese and Politics at Leeds) and then working in China.

Upon my return from China, I gradually started being more involved with the daily work at the kindergarten and then decided that I actually really enjoyed working here, so I started a Montessori course and joined the team of teachers (while also continuing with the administrative and technical work for the kindergarten). After having worked for about 12 years as a teacher in all of our groups (crèche and kindergarten) and becoming a father of 2 girls during this time, I now spend most of my time working from the office – so my voice is what you will most likely hear when you first give us a call.

I do enjoy helping out with all of the groups whenever there is need inside or outside – whether this is in the kitchen, in the cloakrooms, in the gardens or on outings – to give me the energy to sit in front of a screen most of the time! And I love getting to meet parents when they first come here and to show them around The Children’s House.

I grew up alongside The Children’s House, as my parents Katharine and Herbert started it when I was 4 years old. I also attended an international Montessori kindergarten, and I feel that this contributed to me keeping my love for learning alive and setting the foundation of a tolerant, curious attitude to our world and all the life on it. I wish that every child could have this kind of start to life, as I believe this is the path to achieving world peace.

I studied Environmental Sciences in England, with a year abroad in Brisbane, Australia. After this I returned to Vienna to do an MSc in Environmental Technology and International Affairs, and it was during this time that I started working more for The Children’s House. After my studies I fell in love and married a Dutch man, and together we have 2 wonderful sons. We live an unconventional life, where we spend the summers in Greece and the winters in Vienna, where our sons currently attend The Children’s House. Since having my own children my love and appreciation for Maria Montessori’s work has grown, and I have read lots of books and done online Montessori courses to further my understanding of her findings and how to apply them. I love working for The Children’s House, with this warm community of interested, passionate teachers, wonderful children from diverse backgrounds, and friendly parents who are so supportive of a healthy development of their children.

I am from Austria, where I did my master study in  marine biology. When I looked for a good kindergarten place for my first born daughter, who is 20 years old now, I came in contact with the Montessori philosophy. Inspired by the amazing development of my daughter in this set up, I desired to become a Montessori Teacher. I completed my Montessori training for the 3 to 6 year old children in 2009.

I have been fortunate to work at the Children’s House since 2014. I appreciate the combination of a wonderful team, the prepared environment according to the Montessori Method and the constant opportunity to grow and educate myself to guide young children through their developmental phases.

I love working with children from all over the world, because in their core they are free of any kind of prejudices. Every day provides new learning opportunities for us teachers and the children to develop the best potential within ourselves.

I am from Sri Lanka, but have been living in Vienna since 1987. I have two children who are both grown-up.

I completed my Montessori training in Canada and started working at The Children’s House in 2007. I also have a diploma in Cake Decorating.

I love working at The Children’s House as it gives me the opportunity to step into a world of learning and teaching, exchanging and extending knowledge and I find it so rewarding that we are helping and educating one another.

The Children’s House for me is a place in which the Montessori concept of unity is lead by example: Children and adults from different nations, cultures and religions are each an individual piece of the puzzle. Each individual piece put together creates a big and beautiful picture. We recognize how much we have in common whilst celebrating our differences. One of the key elements of The Children’s House is to put theory into practice – knowledge can only be beneficial once you practice what you preach and implement what you have learned.

Together we follow the goal of modeling tolerance and kindness while staying unique and celebrating diversity.
